Okay, we're not really going to talk about "Pay for Play" as it is suggested by South Carolina's Steve Spurrier. We are going to talk about a man who's been attempting to get paid for his play, allegedly of course. Johnny Manziel, a name on everyone's lips. Whether your putting him down or he's your idol the truth of the matter is he's good at his job. He had more rushing yards and passing yards than Tim Tebow did when he won the Heisman. His scintillating performance to take Texas A&M past Alabama in Tuscaloosa is one I hope I never have to see again. However, this off season he seems to be showing more and more of his character off-field, and I have to say it's not a character most people expect to see in a freshman Heisman winner. They expect maturity, integrity and high moral fiber. Instead they've gotten laziness, drunkeness, and now getting-money-he-shouldn't-have-taken-for-autographs. (Sorry not quite sure there is a shorter way to say that. Theft? Larceny? Eh, who cares.) I'll post the link so you can see what ESPN had to say about it. Since they had people check out the actual footage of what went down I'm inclined to believe what they say. Now from what I've read from different websites and articles plenty of people are saying Manziel took money for autographs, but no one has footage, pictures, or bank account transactions for what went down. There's lots of video of him signing paraphernalia, but that doesn't go against any NCAA regulations.
So lets entertain for a moment what the NCAA would do if evidence does come forward of Manziel accepting money for autographs. First, the school, A&M, would suspend Manziel for a period of time. Probably around three matches. Then the NCAA would review A&M's sanctions upon themselves and see if that fulfills their requirements. (Just from past experience, it usually doesn't.) I would say the NCAA could give a reasonable 6-game ban and maybe even a post-season ban. I think the harshest punishment they are likely to hand out is a one year suspension and they may even hand out a post-season ban for A&M, again I believe that's as harsh as it would get. You may think that this is highly unlikely but just look at what happened to Ohio State last season for similar reasons. Ohio State had many players involved and the staff was aware of what was going on, so that makes it a more dire situation that what Manziel is going through. They may be more lenient since it was just one player and I don't think A&M had any idea this was going on.
Why don't I think A&M knew this was going on? Because they hired a lawyer for Johnny Manziel. Not for the team, not for the school, but for Manziel. This leads me to believe that the school itself doesn't need any protecting because they weren't involved in any way. This is totally on the back of Johnny Manziel. So what's the next step for the NCAA investigation? I would say a seizure of Manziel's bank records would be appropriate. If no one can come forward with video or audio evidence of a monetary transaction going down, then the only way they could fairly prosecute him would be to find a discrepancy in his bank records. Lastly, they really need to try and get this investigation wrapped up before the season starts. The NCAA will avoid a good amount of backlash and anger from the school and the football culture in general if they can have a ruling before the season starts and before too much light has been shed on the issue. I can guarantee the longer they wait the more media attention this case will receive and the worse the reaction will be when a judgement is passed.
In conclusion I would like to say sorry for being three days late with this. I've been very very busy....playing Fifa 13. West Ham United's season starts in four days and I've been passing the time playing soccer on the Xbox. Also LSU's RB Hill, has been in some trouble here lately as well. I think he was let back on the team yesterday after he won his assault case. (I'm going off of memory here that could be totally wrong.) LSU has three great running backs so it wouldn't be too heart breaking for them to lose Hill, although he is the best of the three. Regardless he will be back in time for the Alabama-LSU game which is another reason I didn't see fit to highlight another kid ruining their life.
Hope you enjoyed this article, for all you English Premier League fans out there hope your season goes great! And for you Alabama fans gearing up for a great season, remember to call your friends up, remind them how terrible their team was last season, and let them know Alabama wont be slowing down. RTR!
